This November, Cascadia Consulting visited IU Bloomington to start a waste audit. Initiated by a grant, this audit allows IU to analyze how much of our waste is being properly thrown away, recycled, or composted, and provides recommendations moving forward to better divert waste and produce less waste as a campus! Net Impacters had the opportunity to join the waste audit sampling Wednesday and Thursday, November 7th and 8th. At the audit, students learned how to do a visual analysis of the types of waste IU produces – from organizing into plastics, compostables, and non-recoverables. Though this included digging through trash and collaborating with others to determine the best percentages, it also highlighted how much stuff gets thrown away on campus without a second consideration over what happens to it. Moving forward, there is great opportunity for a better streamlined process for how students can recycle properly and the containers/products IU can buy that minimizes waste and negative environmental impact. Furthermore, minimizing waste can also mean future potential savings for the campus, creating a better outcome for the university and the environment.

This week Net Impact had our last meeting focusing on sustainability in the arts. For this meeting, members were split into teams and given supplies to design a poster showing what sustainability meant to them. The final posters highlighted topics such as encouraging IU to turn off the stadium lights when there isn't a football game, planting more trees, and demonstrating various ways that together we can help to the planet. Congratulations to the winning team (picture 2) whose poster will be digitized by our market team and placed around campus!
At the end of September, a group of Net Impact members spent the morning volunteering at the Wonderlab Garden. Members worked with master gardeners from Purdue to weed and rake leaves, preparing the garden for fall. In addition to learning more about the master gardening program, we learned about the importance of having public gardens where people can come and enjoy nature. One of the purposes of the Wonderlab Garden is to show people that even though Bloomington may not have the most nutrient rich soil, lots of plants can still flourish. If you're ever looking for a quick trip off campus to destress from classes, the Wonderlab Garden is a great place to go!
