By: Trace Weaver Net Impact held its second meeting in the apparel industry series on Monday, March 21st. For this meeting, we watched most of the documentary called The True Cost, which looks at some of the problems with the fashion industry today. Chief among those is the degrading working conditions of factory workers in Asia. The buildings being used to make our clothes overseas are oftentimes not safe to work in. The world was given a reminder of this a few years ago when over 900 workers were killed in the collapse of a sweatshop in Bangladesh.
In addition to concerns about worker safety, there are also a lot of problems when it comes to worker pay in the sweatshops. Most workers earn just a couple dollars a day and barely have enough water to bathe. This begs the question as to whether we need to take a stand against cheap clothing made overseas in these conditions in order to force a change in the industry. As the film points out, the majority of clothes US citizens wore in the 1960s were made in the United States, compared to just 3% today.

By: Trace Weaver On Wednesday, March 9th, the Net Impact marketing team held its first ever workshop. This particular workshop was led by Vice President of Marketing Melanie Lent, who showed us some cool tips on how to use Adobe Illustrator. Some of things Melanie went over at the workshop included how to group shapes together to create a figure, how to use the pen tool to trace an image, and how to add text that can be placed on any promotional materials. If you were able to make the workshop, we hope you enjoyed it and learned something new in the process! Look forward to more workshops from the marketing team in the future!
By: Trace Weaver Net Impact held its final GA meeting before spring break on Monday, March 7th. This meeting was a brief break from our apparel industry series, which will resume on March 21st. We kicked off this meeting with another report from our CSR news team, this time from James Steimle and Young Jae Chun.
They delved into Leonardo DiCaprio's speech at the Oscars, in which he addressed the imminent threat of climate change. They also talked about how climate change has affected the film industry, with many filmmakers unable to rely on past filming locations due to the degradation of the environment. Additionally, they discussed some of the actions Leo has taken to help combat climate change, including his narration and co-directing of the film The Eleventh Hour. By: Trace Weaver Net Impact kicked off its new series of meetings on the apparel industry on Monday, February 29th. At this meeting, we started off with another CSR news team report from Agrima. She discussed the falling oil prices and its effects on the environment. Oil has fallen to $32 a barrel, which has lead to less investment in alternative energy and bigger vehicles being bought. However, this trend has also prevented the need for more new drilling. So there are both positives and negatives that have come from the falling oil prices.
